EducationOur Goal: Boost every child’s chance for success in school, work and life while supporting United Way Worldwide’s goal to increase graduation rates by 50% by 2020.

Education is the cornerstone of success for both individuals and the community as a whole and can make a huge difference in people’s lives.

Our strategy is to provide support services and initiatives that boost every child’s chance for success in school, work and life. Through our cradle to career model, we can ensure higher levels of academic success.

Programs in place to make this a reality include:

Together for Tomorrow: Together for Tomorrow is a special initiative supported by AmeriCorps VISTAS that seeks to support Title I public schools through volunteerism to improve student attendance, behavior and course performance.

Early Warning Response Systems: The Early Warning Response System (EWRS) identifies and assists middle school students with early warning indicators of dropping out of school. EWRS identifies early predictors, such as attendance, behavior and performance in subjects like English and Math.

Pathways to Success: Sponsored by AmeriCorps and Volunteer Florida, AmeriCorps Pathways to Success offers academic support and college/career mentoring to 10th through 12th grade students. This means free after-school tutoring, individualized in-classroom attention, help with filing for college financial aid, guidance on determining post-graduation goals and general mentorship.

Going2College: Going2College is an initiative designed to reduce barriers to information about higher education. Going 2 College improves college access and streamlines the application process by providing timely updates via text message.

Central Florida College Access Network: The Central Florida College Access Network (CFCAN) is an initiative designed to reduce barriers to information about higher education.

Reading-Pals-300x212ReadingPals: Nearly 40% of Central Florida’s third graders attending public school cannot read at the appropriate level. This puts these students at a distinct disadvantage throughout their scholastic careers. These children are four times more likely to drop out of high school if they continue on this path.

ReadingPals connects passionate volunteers with students who need extra help developing essential literacy skills
