Heart of Florida United Way\u2019s Women\u2019s Leadership Council is currently working to recruit 200 volunteers to work with voluntary pre-kindergarten students during the 2015-2016 school year. As an extra incentive, the Women\u2019s Leadership Council has issued a special challenge to local organizations and companies: whoever recruits the most volunteers for ReadingPals by January 15 gets a complementary table at the 2016 Women\u2019s Leadership Luncheon\u2014a $1500 value\u2014on March 17 at the Rosen Centre Hotel<\/strong>. Diana Nyad, endurance swimmer and author, will be the keynote speaker.<\/p>\n

Nearly one third of Central Florida\u2019s third graders attending public school cannot read at the appropriate level. This puts these students at a distinct disadvantage throughout their scholastic careers. These children are four times more likely to drop out of high school if they continue on this path.<\/p>\n

ReadingPals<\/strong> connects passionate volunteers with students who need extra help developing essential literacy skills. Part of a statewide initiative to promote early literacy, the\u00a0ReadingPals<\/strong>\u00a0program began in 2012 led by the passion of Carol and Barney Barnett.<\/p>\n

  2. Pass a background check.<\/li>\n

  5. Work with your pal to develop valuable reading skills with the provided materials.<\/li>\n
