Reasons to Hire an Integrator Early on for a Multi-Unit Project
Our lives have become increasingly more connected – from our cell phones to our cars to our homes. Our desire to stay connected with our environment has made automated amenities a necessity in today’s luxury housing units and upscale office buildings. These added bonuses make occupants’ lives easier, while creating an exclusive atmosphere of comfort and convenience.
As a developer, you know this, and most likely you are thinking of incorporating automation within your next multi-unit project. However, you may be wondering how you will successfully deliver superior results without going over budget. Regardless of whether you are about to build a multi-story high rise to be used as housing (such as a hotel, resort, condos, or an establishment for senior living) or whether it is a multi-level commercial office building, Custom Audio Video (CAV) has five reasons why you should choose to hire an integrator for your project. From design to installation, CAV can help.
Impress Potential Residents
Luxury buyers know exactly what they want in their next residence or office space. Thus, developers know that appealing to potential occupants is more than jaw-dropping views and private entrances but includes elite automation amenities as well. When new visitors imagine total control of their climate and entertainment from their smartphones, their emotional response will inspire them to act quickly to purchase space in your new building.
Create Automation That Will Last
Why wait until the walls are up before you include the integrators into the mix? One of the most important reasons to partner with an integrator early on is to ensure that, in the end, you have completed a high-quality project that won’t bog down the buyers in the future. Hiring an integrator early on means that your client(s) won’t have to face paying for an upgrade later on because all the necessary parts were accounted for from the start.
Shorten Your Construction Timeline
Tight timelines are common place in today’s market. It is crucial to alleviate any common stressors that could potentially cause your project to take longer and cost more. Countless times before, a builder will wait to include an integrator to their team after they have already started building, only to find that the designs that they are working from don’t adequately compliment automation. As a result, the construction timeline lengthens. Therefore, we recommended that you add an integrator to your team early on, while you are still in the initial stages of design. CAV will be happy to consult with you and discuss your network and project needs. We can ensure that your designs include all of the major components necessary, thereby guaranteeing a successful installation in a timely manner. Undoubtedly, adding CAV to your team, before you even start building, will not only decrease the overall construction time for your project to be completed, it will ensure that you are going to have everything done right the first time around.
Decrease Design and Installation Costs
With the design-build approach, communication is transparent as everyone strives to achieve a common goal. This team centered method not only reduces scoping and operational costs, but it can prevent change to the orders as well. Altering plans to a project will obviously be costly, add construction delays and cause undue stress to you, the builder.
Avoid Potential Pitfalls
An integration firm that is well-versed in every aspect of project design, electrical engineering and installation is mandatory. Even the best designed automation system throughout a commercial building or a residential dwelling unit can incur problems if not installed properly. Because our integrators at CAV are familiar with all the steps of the process, we can foresee and eliminate issues that traditional electricians may not have experienced.
Increase Customer Satisfaction
In the end, the success of your project is measured by the happiness of your occupants. Key card access, closed circuit surveillance and smart door locks help residents feel safe and secure. Furthermore, integrating video intercoms and alert systems will help owners and/or managers communicate freely with their clients and ensure that the best concierge service is provided.
If you are a developer working on your next project, consider hiring an integrator who can help bring continuity to your project from start to finish. For more information, contact CAV today.
Turning Your Empty Nest to a Party Fest
Well, your last born child has recently graduated, and even though it’s bitter sweet to witness, just the other day you watched them happily skip towards making a new life for themselves…a life where they don’t live at home anymore. Sure, that’s fabulous for them, but what about you? Where do you go from here, now that they are gone? Suddenly, the house is ridiculously quiet, you’ve got tons of spare time that you don’t know what to do with, and it’s been practically two decades since you’ve focused on yourself. So…now what? What do you do now with the rest of your life, and who are you these days anyways?
I know it’s tempting to view your home as an empty nest, but wouldn’t it better to view it as a place that could be a party fest? Okay, well, not exactly a party fest…let’s not get carried away (after all, there is still future school loans left to pay for), but there is nothing wrong with realizing that it’s now your time to enjoy your home in a new way…your way. Am I right? Of course I am. Here are some quick tips, tricks and add-on’s to make that nest of yours…seriously…life-changing:
Music:
You’ve got to have music playing throughout the entire house each day. That’s a must! Turning on Pandora and connecting it to your Sonos speakers will instantly take away the pain of solitude. Trust us, during this period in your life, silence is the devil, so save yourself by pressing a few, quick buttons and watch the magic happen. For some miraculous reason, music has a tendency to take a somber, lonely feeling and transform it into a “yeah, that’s right, this is where the fun is at” feeling. Love yourself enough to play music. Give Custom Audio Video a quick call and we can hook you up.
Lights:
Gone are the days that you have to remind someone to turn off the lights when they leave the room. Now, the lights are always off because your little baby is gone forever, and you are the only one left. Hey, don’t put yourself through that! Rather than walking into a room that’s dark and lonely, add a motion sensor near the entryway and have us rig the room lights to turn on as you enter. If you do this, every room you enter will automatically feel inviting and lively. It will also prevent you from being tempted to leave every room in the house on while you are at home alone. Motion sensors are also awesome because you won’t have to remind yourself to turn the lights off. Plus, something about having to flip a light switch on, within a dark room that use to always be lively, just reminds you that your baby is gone so you don’t need that. Call Custom Audio Video and schedule a walk-through appointment. We would be happy to give you a quote for what that would cost you.
Motorized Window Shades
Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to go around the whole house to open all the curtains? Sure it would. After all, if you are the only one home now, it will be up to you to allow the outside world in. Within the early phases of “the empty nest syndrome”, it is tempting to get wrapped up in your own thoughts and become stationary within one room of the house. In other words, unless you are adamant about pulling yourself out of this rut, your shades are going to stay drawn all day unless you get up and do it. Custom Audio Video can show you a way out of this torment by simply adding motorized shades to your windows. With just a touch of a button, that burden can be removed from your morning “to do” list. We can also show you how to put this task on a programmed timer.
Motorized Screens
Hey, we live in the South and the weather is most of the time downright perfect. The wind is usually blowing through the trees and the birds are happily chirping. So, why not stay positive and allow the outside world in? That’s right…the bugs. Well, Custom Audio Video has got you covered! We can install motorized wall screens that can fit almost any existing door structure. For example, let’s say you have French doors or pocket doors that lead to your back patio, but you rarely open them because you don’t want to deal with the bugs. Well, call us to come take a look, and we would be glad to figure out a way to install, tastefully, motorized screens that you can control with just a quick touch of a button. Trust me, there’s nothing better to cure those lonely blues than the sound of the birds chirping and the gentle breeze from the outside blowing in.
So… our basic regimen to eliminate the feeling of an empty nest is as follows:
- Play music that is quick and easy to turn on with high-quality speakers
- Install motion sensors that will automatically turn on lights when you enter a room
- Bring sunlight in easily with motorized window shades, set on a timer preferably
- Have motorized screens installed at your doorways leading to the outside
In a nutshell, it’s hard enough to let your babies fly the coup and start a new life of their own. Don’t make it hard on yourself. This should be a happy time in your life, too. It’s a chance for you to get to know who you are now…without them at home. Embrace this transition and give yourself the comforts that will make that possible. You are worth it!
Quick Ways to Make Your Bar or Restaurant High-Tech
UberEats, Grubhub, Doordash, 912food2go…these are just a few of the food delivery services circulating in the South right now. Each year, it’s becoming more common for people to choose to stay in for the night and just have technology bring food to them. So…are restaurants endangered? Geez, we sure hope not. After all, people will always need people…right? Furthermore, nothing beats the experience of going out to bar or restaurant: the ambience, music, visuals, laughter, people, and food…all these mixed together is just simply irreplaceable.
According to the National Restaurant Association, next year’s “foodservice industry sales are expected to reach $632 billion,” and surely, restaurants will reinvest a lot of this money into technology that will give them the edge over their competitors. Even though more bar/restaurant owners are familiar with integrated controls and automated systems, they still don’t fully understand the possible potential. Well, here are some fairly easy ways that you can make your bar or restaurant more High-Tech:
Motorized Video Grid:
Basic Components Needed: A series of motorized screens, Constructed grid, Control Panel
Benefits: Rather than having stationary screens attached to your wall, placing the screens upon a motorized grid will give you the ability to easily move the screens in any formation you’d like. For instance, you may want to display content differently on all of the screens, or you may want to clump just a few of them together. But if there is a really big game on and you want to really draw some customers in, you can advertise “the largest screen in town” and put them all together. No matter what formation the screens are in, they’re pretty eye-catching, and it will make your bar a go-to destination when the next big game is playing.
Social Media Wall:
Basic Components Needed: Mounted Screens, Digital Signage Software, Control Panel
Benefits: You will be able to customize real-time streaming content via your establishment. Having a social media wall will keep your customers engaged while they are there, allowing them to post onto Twitter and/or Instagram and simultaneously view what they just posted along with what others in your bar/restaurant are posting. They will be able to send pics of their table, the menu, surroundings and post comments. Before you know it, your bar/restaurant will be considered the ideal place for one to go if he/she likes to hashtag. Plus, the display will encourage your customers to do the bar’s social media marketing. Win-win
Digital Menu Boards:
Basic Components Needed: Mounted or Motorized Screens, Software, Control Panel
Benefits: Digital Menu Boards are LED signs that are quirky and eye-catching. Your customers will be able to easily see and read them. Using a control panel, you can create an unlimited number of playlists, morning menu ideas, lunch menu, dinner menu, happy hours menu special and more! Need to make a quick change to a price or the name of the person performing? No problem. All changes wirelessly update the menu within minutes! You can add other screen panels as well! We can place them just about anywhere you want them.
Table-side Ordering and Payment Processing:
Basic Components Needed: iPads, POS system software
Benefits: With an iPad Point of Sale system, your employees will have the luxury of being mobile. Some restaurants have even started putting iPad at tables so customers can order and pay without talking to a server. When your customers’ checks are ready, you can process their payments right at the table. Instead of taking their credit cards to the register and bringing back a receipt for them to sign, you can process their cards and have them sign directly on the iPad. This streamlines the payment process both for your customers as well your employees. This equates to happy customers and an increase in table-turnover hourly.
Interactive Tabletops:
Basic Components Needed: IRT table, Digital Signage Software, Control Panel
Benefits: The IRT (Interactive Restaurant Technology) Table offers customers a state-of-the-art ordering system, super fun entertainment and a new way to communicate. The unique diamond-hard safety glass provides strength and resilience to nearly unbreakable levels! As a result, it’s not only safe and strong, but enormously visually pleasing as well as intuitively sensitive to human touch. In fact the unique Touch Technology supports an unlimited number of touches at the same time. One customer may be swiping through the digital menu while another across from them is already placing what they want to order. With four built-in high quality cameras, customers will be able to clearly see “selfies” of each other, do video conferences with other guests at other tables, or call for assistance to a server.
Whether swiping right, left, hash tagging or tapping for details, the use of technology comes as natural as breathing these days for most of us. Therefore, it’s no surprise that if people plan to spend money and go out, they are expecting technology to play a role in what they go out to do.

How to Convert a Spare Room into a Man Cave
The kids are gone and now you have a spare room in your home. What should you do with it? Shute, don’t save it for them so they have a place to sleep on that one night that they’ll come back to visit! Instead, turn it into an awesome man cave, of course!
First, you’ve got to take some time and walk through the space. Visualize what you want your Man Cave to look like. However, be realistic in your assessment of the space and function. Measure your space because you will be using it to plan your man cave in detail later. Next, come visit Custom Audio Video’s Showroom, and we can help you from there.
Here is a list of some of the major components we’ve used, in the past that have helped our clients achieve “the Best Man Cave of the Century” trophy:
- Video Wall
- Screen and Projector
- Surround Sound Speakers
- Acoustic Treatment (Sound-proofing)
- Motorized Black-out Curtains/Shades
- Ambience Lighting
- Video Gaming Interactive Chairs & Accessories
- Mini-Fridge, Hidden Liquor Cabinet or a Kegerator
Television Wall: A television wall is just that…it is a wall made up of televisions! You can choose to use all of the televisions at once to show one large wall image, or you can choose to watch multiple channels at one time. In other words, we can set it up similar to what your local sports bar has.
Screen and Projector: You can show even larger images with a projector! We can make it to where the screen is retractable and have it hide inside your ceiling. With the projector, we can install it on your existing ceiling, but why not have that retract to somewhere hidden as well, right? Online streaming will be a cinch to do after we show you how to use it.
Surround-Sound Speakers: Uh…that’s a must! You want to feel like you are in a movie theater at times, right? Of course you do. Plus, when you just want to play music, surround-sound speakers will give you that mind-blowing sound you’ve been searching for. We can put together a home-theater system that will knock your socks off!
Acoustic Treatment: Yeah, it’s a fancy way to say that sound-proofing your man cave is suggested. After all, the last thing you need to hear while you are enjoying your man cave is “Turn it down!” Acoustically treating your cave will not only eliminate complaints, it will improve the audio quality in there and allow you to live uninhibited.
Motorized Black-out Curtains/Shades: There are several perks to having black-out shades or curtains. Having them motorized is even better. Black-outs will provide better picture quality, less glare, keep your cave cool and of course give you the privacy you deserve.
Lighting: Improve the atmosphere and ambience of your man cave with intentional lighting. Guests you have visit your man cave will appreciate it to.
Video Gaming Interactive Chairs and Accessories: Are you a gamer or do you want to become one? Well, we can hook you up with a gaming chair that vibrates and provides audio inside the headrests. Are you a golfer? We can set up with a Golf Simulator. Do you want to go inside the game that you are playing in? Virtual reality has been taking the gaming world by storm over recent years, and we’ve got you covered. We can supply you with a chair that is not only comfortable, it will provide motion-tracker handsets, pedal controllers and allow you to rotate 360 degrees in your game if you want to!
Kegerator, Mini-Fridge, or Hidden Liquor Cabinet: This one almost goes without saying. After all, you need something to prevent you from getting thirsty while you’re in that cave of yours, right? Kegerators (small, sleek refrigerators designed to tastefully store and hide a keg from view) are perfect for hosting groups of friends during game night. The CO2 built-in pump will pour frothy beer just like you’d get from a bar. If beer isn’t your thing…no problem. These days, almost anything is possible for your man cave. What about a hidden liquor cabinet? We don’t make cabinets, but we can work with your contractor to make it happen if you want to go there.
So, that about sums it up. Take the room measurements and come to our showroom for ideas. Together, we can make it happen.

BEAT THE HEAT & ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF MOTORIZED SHADES
Adding Smart Shades to Low-country Home is a No-Brainer
Perhaps you’ve never heard of smart shading before or maybe you’re hesitant to upgrade your existing window treatments, but motorized shades are incredibly popular in the Low-country and with good reason. Whatever brought you to our blog, we’re happy to be able to share with you some of the benefits our clients have enjoyed as a result of installing motorized window shades in their homes.
1. CONVENIENCE & COMFORT
Homeowners that have to adjust their blinds manually tend to leave them in the same position for days on end. They don’t want to take the time to adjust them throughout the day every day. Makes sense…who wants to do that, right? However, what if all of the window treatments throughout your home could be quickly adjusted simply from a small push of a single button? Having shades as a part of your smart home automation system will not only help maintain the right temperature in your own, it will also provide a convenient way to achieve optimal comfort.
2. ENERGY SAVINGS
Your window treatments can play a big role in lowering your monthly energy bill. During the summer, when solar heat is a big concern, your motorized shades can be programmed to automatically lower so that your rooms can be spared from overheating. Also, as an added perk, during the winter your shades will act as an insulator so that the warm air doesn’t leak out through the windows.
3. SECURITY & PRIVACY
Burglars are far less likely to enter your property if they think that you are home. Smart window shades can use a “mock occupancy” setting to create the illusion that somebody is home. Wow, you’ve got to admit it…that’s pretty neat! Also, motorized shades can be programmed to raise and lower throughout the day automatically, thereby giving the appearance of movement within an unoccupied house. For moments when you’d prefer greater privacy, achieving complete opaqueness happens with the push of a single button.
4. DÉCOR
If the thought of limited options for smart shades has kept you from upgrading in the past, there’s no need to worry. There are thousands of patterns and fabric types to choose from, and you can even get motorized tracks that work with your existing draperies! It’s a great opportunity to give your home a fresh new look.
7. HOME VALUE
As with most smart technologies, motorized shades significantly increase the value of your home. Smart window treatments are incredibly popular with home buyers. So if you’re considering moving in the next few years, then why not add the shades now, enjoy them for a time, and then recoup the cost when you sell your home?
Here are just a few of Custom Audio Video’s Shading Selections:

You can use it for one room, multiple rooms, or an entire home or building…all at the touch of a button. Custom Audio Video can directly integrate your wireless blind system with the lighting control system in your home, delivering you optimal lighting control over any space of your home.
Crestron Horizontal Sheers add beauty, convenience, and comfort to any interior space. Featuring horizontal fabric vanes that float between two layers of sheer, knitted fabric, horizontal sheers offer an elegant and attractive window shading solution for controlling natural lighting and providing privacy. The fabric can be raised for an unobstructed view or lowered to soften the view, and when fully lowered, the vanes can be tilted and closed to filter the amount of daylight and conceal the view. The vanes are available in a selection of decorative fabrics with a choice of light filtering (translucent) or room darkening (opaque) options. Crestron horizontal sheers can be custom specified and ordered to fit windows up to 8 feet wide by 8 feet tall. Crestron horizontal sheers can be motorized and controlled using a choice of keypads, touch screens, handheld remotes, and mobile devices.
Whatever your goal with smart home automation, there’s no denying that motorized shades
have a lot to offer. We can help design & install the perfect shading solution for you!
Preparing Your Home for Vacations
There are two ways to prepare your home for vacations. The first way involves you going on vacation, and the second way pertains to those who are coming to your home to vacation. Two totally different things…two different ways to prepare.
Vacation Rentals
There are several home and room rental communities out there these days (Airbnb happens to be our drug of choice right now), and if you are interested in renting out your home for a night, week or month, then you are going to have to put a little technology into your home to make it top pick. After all, tourists have tons of places to choose from. A house that has a home theater, motion sensors throughout, optimal lighting, outside entertaining, and surround sound…all of it controlled with a touch of a button or with a swipe of the phone…now, that is a house that’s always booked!
However, what we really want to talk about is the way that everybody wants to prepare for a vacation!
Vacation-Proofing” Your House before you go on Vacation
You’ve packed your suitcase and booked your itinerary, but before you board the plane, take the time to protect your home while you’re on vacation. The summer time months are when home burglaries peak most.
To fully enjoy your trip, here’s a checklist that may help:
Home security system: Your first line of defense against burglary is a home security system that includes door and window sensors. Custom Audio Video can even install motion sensors throughout your home. Be sure to get a system that will allow you to monitor from a remote location. Obviously, you want to try to make sure that the alarm is set before you leave, but if you have a smart security system, then that won’t matter.
Security Sensors: Most modern home security systems have the option to monitor not only when someone enters your property but also if it’s Mother Nature doing the invading. Flood sensors can detect changes in moisture levels of the air, which can indicate broken pipes or appliances.
Security cameras: A handful of well-placed security cameras both inside and outside can mean the difference between catching a perpetrator or not. It’s important to get a security camera that is activated by motion as well as one that will send alerts and video clips to your smartphone. A camera like that will also give you the ability to live stream remotely.
Add a smart lock to your door: A smart door lock lets you unlock your door remotely from your smartphone and grant temporary access with expiring codes. For instance, if you have a neighbor checking in on the house or a pet sitter coming to take care of the dogs, it would set your mind at ease if you could keep track of who is going in and when. Spare keys would also no longer be an issue.
Install a video doorbell: A video doorbell allows you to answer your front door from anywhere. Each time someone rings the doorbell, you’ll get an alert on your phone so you can see and speak to the visitor in real time. If you’re out of cell service on the beach or hacking through the jungle, you can still access a log of video clips later. Some models also have motion detection capabilities, so you’ll still get an alert even if the person doesn’t actually ring the bell. They’re also handy for catching package thieves and spreading the word around the neighborhood.
Interior Lights: Set timers on interior lights. This goes a long way in deterring burglars who often look for crimes of opportunity. Don’t allow your house to appear as if no one is home.
Set the HVAC: When you’re gone, there’s no use heating or cooling an empty house to a comfortable temperature, but you don’t want to turn your system off entirely, either. With a programmable thermostat, you can set a schedule ahead of time so your house will be back to a comfortable temperature by the time you return home. Even better, get a smart thermostat so you can check in on your home’s temperature from afar and make adjustments if needed.
Outdoor Security Lights: When looking for a way inside, burglars are more likely to go for areas that are dark and hidden from the neighbors’ view. You can illuminate these hiding spots by installing outdoor security lights in burglary-prone areas such as the back door or sides of the house.
Above all else, an unoccupied home must simulate human presence, despite the fact that no one is home. So, before you go on your next vacation, call us and ask us about the ways that we can “Vacation Proof” your home.
Custom Audio Video: Providing the Tools to Protect Your Home When You’re Away
Making Your Outdoors Summer Friendly
The summer months are quickly approaching…the pollen problem is finally gone, the pool just got a new filter, your backyard trees and flowers have fully budded, and the lawn guy has taken care of the fallen leaves. So…what are you waiting for? Turn that winter-mode off and enjoy the beauty of your backyard.
Here are a few tips on transforming that desolate no-man’s land of a backyard that you have right now into a welcoming, blissful, party kind of an oasis, that will surely make anyone who comes to visit you this season feel downright lucky!
- Outdoor Speakers: They are an absolute MUST! Custom Audio Video can install attractive, weather-friendly, high quality, surround-sound speakers permanently to the perimeters of your backyard. You can easily control them through your smart phone, tablet or voice-control. Changing music stations and volume will be a breeze. Say goodbye to the days where you had to haul your portable Sonos back and forth to the outside. Now, say hello to the clean, classy, permanent look of installed outdoor speakers.
- Outdoor Lighting: What good is a backyard oasis if you can’t splendor in it at night, right? Furthermore, a backyard bursting with plants requires the ambience associated with soft, private lighting. We know that it would be an absolute shame if no one could see the new flower bed you just made, so let Custom Audio Video help you make your backyard shine…anytime of the day. We can meet with you at your house, and you can show us points of interest, pathways and areas that you want to be able to see safely at night. It’s that easy. There won’t be any cords or plug-ins for you to have to deal with. Plus, we’ll set up it so that you can easily control it from your phone or tablet.
- Covered Outdoor Areas: We all know that the weather around here is amazing during this time of year. However, we also know that we lost some of our trees with prior hurricanes, and that means we’ve lost some of the precious shade that we’re use to. It’s time to incorporate having a pergola, gazebo or some other covered outside area to protect you from the shade. Even though we don’t build structures, we can definitely hook you up with the lighting, fan system, auto shades, speaker system and visual equipment to make the place fitting for royalty. Your house will be the place all your friends want to go to so much, that you may start charging an entry fee.
- Pool: There is not a single person that can deny it, this area of the country during the summer months can be downright brutal if you don’t have any water to plunge yourself into. Whether it’s above ground or in-ground, if you want to have a backyard that’s truly visit able, you’ve got to install a pool. Once again, we can’t help you with that part, but we can control the lighting, temperature, jets, cleaning schedule and motorized pool cover that the pool requires.
- Security Cameras: Now, we all know you don’t want someone to come and steal your dream backyard from you, so it’s probably time to question whether that new grill is worth protecting. Let Custom Audio Video help provide you with the peace of mind you deserve. We can discretely place security cameras, motion sensors, and lighting around the perimeters of your house. This will deter even the most boldest of criminals out there…especially if you have light sensors.
Well…you’ve got a lot to do. You’ve got to buy plants, extend the patio, skim the pool, create new pathways, make plans for shade, and perhaps you’ve got to surf the net for some new outside furniture. Yes, much work lay ahead, but all of it goes to waste if you can’t hear anything while you’re back there and enjoy looking at it through the night.
